Roof Replacement Help in Paris, KY

Paris, KY lies about 18 miles northeast of Lexington, KY, on the Stoner Fork of the Licking River. The city's history page says it was chartered in 1789 as Hopewell, named for the hometown of proprietor Lawrence Protzman, and renamed Paris in 1790. It is the seat of Bourbon County, formed in 1785.

You call or fill in the form, and we pass your details to one roofer who covers the Paris area. They look the roof over and leave a written estimate. Any contract you sign is with the roofer alone.

Older Buildings and Homes in Paris, KY

The city describes its downtown as early American architecture, anchored by the Bourbon County Courthouse and Duncan Tavern. Major Joseph Duncan built the tavern of native limestone in 1788, four years before Kentucky became a state, and it has twenty rooms. It now houses the state headquarters of the Kentucky Society DAR.

The Board of Architectural Review oversees the City of Paris Historic District, which runs from Second Street to Fourth Street between Main Street and High Street. The Board reviews Certificate of Appropriateness applications and meets as needed. If your building sits inside those lines, ask whether your roof work needs a certificate.

Elsewhere in town, expect to compare asphalt shingles with metal, and ask for photos of the decking, flashing and attic vents.

From Repair to Replacement in Paris, KY

  • Whole-roof replacement. For a roof that keeps needing patches, a roofer prices the whole job. Read about full roof replacement.
  • After a storm. The 2014 tornado tore away parts of roofs in Paris. A roofer can price that kind of damage; you and your insurer settle the claim. See storm and hail damage.
  • Metal panels. Metal runs higher per square foot. Inside the historic district, check with the Board first. Learn about metal roof replacement.
  • Asphalt shingles. Shingles sit at the low end of the price table. Compare styles under shingle roof replacement.
  • Fixes before a full job. One leak or a few missing shingles may be repairable. The roof repair page covers when a fix makes sense.

The 2014 Tornado and Other Bourbon County Storms

On October 7, 2014, an EF1 tornado formed half a mile south of Paris at 4:12 p.m. NWS Louisville put its winds at 100 mph over a path 1.67 miles long and 50 to 60 yards wide. Several homes lost parts of their roofs and took wall and siding damage. Homes on Windermere Lane had attic and soffit damage, and one person was hurt.

Wind leads the story across the region. On March 3, 2023, Blue Grass Airport in Lexington measured 69 mph gusts, and NWS logged trees and power lines down across Paris and North Middletown that afternoon. On July 21, 2026, a brief 75 mph EF0 touched down southeast of North Middletown.

The record runs deep: an 1883 F1 crossed the lower edge of town and damaged the courthouse, and an 1887 F2 struck at or near Paris. Ice matters too, though NWS gives no Bourbon County figures for the January 2009 ice storm.

Bourbon County's Building Inspector and Permits

Kentucky leaves single-family permits to local governments. In Paris, one building inspector covers both the city and Bourbon County through Bourbon County Joint Planning, 525 High St., Suite 126, (859) 987-2150. Code enforcement shares the address.

No re-roof rule is posted there. Your roofer should call that office ahead of the tear-off and take out any permit it calls for. You can also phone the office to ask whether roofers must register with it. Downtown, the Board of Architectural Review may need to weigh in too.

Before Your Paris, KY Inspection

Who issues building permits in Paris, KY?

One inspector at Bourbon County Joint Planning, 525 High St., Suite 126, handles both the city and the county. The office doesn't post a specific re-roof rule, so your roofer asks there before the old roof comes off and files for anything needed. You can reach the office at (859) 987-2150 to ask directly.

Does the historic district affect my roof?

It may. The Board of Architectural Review oversees the district between Second and Fourth streets and Main and High streets, and it reviews Certificate of Appropriateness applications. It meets as needed rather than monthly, so ask early if you plan to change the roof's look.

The 2014 tornado damaged homes here. What should I do after a storm?

Look from the ground for missing shingles or bent flashing, and take photos. A roofer can document and price the damage. You and your insurer settle the claim. If the insurer denies all or part of it in writing, Kentucky gives you until midnight of the fifth business day after that notice to back out of an insurance-paid roofing contract.

What should I ask a roofer before signing?

Ask to see proof of their general liability and workers' comp policies, where their shop is, and for two or three past customers to call. Ask for the shingle or panel maker's warranty papers too. The contract should be written, itemized and clear on who pulls any permit. Kentucky's Attorney General takes consumer complaints at 888-432-9257.
